Outdoor & Patio Tile
Patios, fireplaces, backyard walls — outdoor tile that handles Arizona heat and looks stunning year-round.
Free In-Home Tile Evaluation →Outdoor living is a big part of life in Phoenix, and the right tile can completely transform a backyard. At Albaner Tile and Stone, we specialize in outdoor tile installations that are built to handle extreme heat, UV exposure, and temperature swings — because not all tile is appropriate for Arizona outdoor use.
We install tile on patios, pool decks, outdoor fireplaces, backyard feature walls, entryways, and covered outdoor living areas. We use only porcelain or natural stone rated for outdoor use — materials that won't crack, fade, or absorb moisture in our climate. Wood-look porcelain plank is especially popular for Phoenix patios because it looks like wood without the maintenance issues.
Whether you're building a new outdoor space or refreshing an existing one, we'll give you an honest assessment of what will work and what won't in the Arizona sun — and then install it so it lasts.
Installing outdoor tile in Phoenix isn't the same as installing it in a milder climate. Arizona's summers bring sustained heat above 110°F, intense UV radiation, and monsoon moisture — then winter nights can drop below 40°F. That 70-degree daily temperature swing puts enormous stress on tile and grout. We specifically select materials rated for these conditions and install them with proper expansion joints and flexible grout to prevent cracking over time.
For pool decks and wet areas, slip resistance is also critical. We select tiles with appropriate surface textures and COF (coefficient of friction) ratings for wet environments — so your outdoor space looks great and is safe to use year-round.
Covered patios are one of the most popular outdoor tile projects we do in the Phoenix area. A covered patio with wood-look porcelain plank tile can completely transform a backyard — it feels like an extension of the home, stays comfortable to walk on even in summer, and requires almost zero maintenance compared to wood decking. If you're considering an outdoor tile project, call us for a free estimate and we'll walk you through the material options that work best for your specific space.

Outdoor-rated porcelain is the best choice for Arizona patios. It has a low water absorption rate (important for monsoon season), handles temperature extremes without cracking, and doesn't fade in intense UV. Travertine is also popular for pool areas. We never use ceramic tile outdoors — it's not rated for the UV exposure and temperature swings of Arizona summers.
No — indoor tile is not rated for outdoor use in Arizona. It can crack from thermal expansion, fade in UV, and absorb moisture during monsoons. We only use porcelain or natural stone with an outdoor rating (PEI rating 4 or higher) for all exterior applications.
The main concern is thermal expansion — tile and grout expand and contract as temperatures swing from 45°F at night to 115°F during the day. We account for this by using proper expansion joints, flexible grout, and porcelain tile rated for these conditions. When installed correctly, outdoor tile in Arizona is extremely durable.
Wood-look porcelain plank is very popular for covered patios — it looks like wood without any of the maintenance issues in Arizona's climate. Large-format stone-look porcelain (24"×24" or larger) is popular for open patios. Natural travertine is widely used around pools for its non-slip surface and natural beauty.
